Doctors and Charitable Organizations Co-Sponsor UIC Teaching Seminar

Ophthalmologists To Instruct Medical Residents on Proven Low-Cost Cataract Surgical Techniques

MORTON GROVE, Ill. - Sept. 20, 2021 - PRLog -- Three veteran private practice ophthalmologists will present a teaching seminar to instruct medical residents (who will later specialize in ophthalmology) in the time-tested procedure of Small Incision Cataract Surgery (SICS) at the University of Illinois College of Medicine on September 25th, 2021. The SICS surgical procedure is a refined method that is cost-effective and simple. It is important for ophthalmologists to learn this method because it can be used in medical facilities around the world and with minimal equipment. In addition to learning the surgical techniques, one of the primary goals for the three doctors is to inspire medical students to become involved in humanitarian work across the globe. The presenters include Stuart Sondheimer, MD, based in Skokie, Illinois; Daniel Alter, MD-PHD, based in Des Plaines, Illinois; and William Myer, MD, based in Chicago, Illinois. All three ophthalmologists each have nearly 30 years or more of professional experience.

Co-sponsoring the teaching seminar are SEE International, FOCUS and The University of Illinois College of Medicine - Department of Ophthalmology. SEE International is a nonprofit humanitarian organization based in Santa Barbara, California that provides accessible vision care services to underserved communities internationally and in the United States. FOCUS, based in Barrington Hills, Illinois is dedicated to promoting eye care in Haiti which is desperately needed after the recent earthquake. Dr. Sondheimer is especially involved in donating his expertise to the underserved as he and his colleagues have frequently traveled to impoverished countries around the world to provide eye surgeries at no cost to patients.

According to Dr. Sondheimer, "This is a unique opportunity for me to return to my medical school, instruct medical students, and hopefully inspire the students to embrace and pursue national and international humanitarian efforts throughout their professional careers."

Members of the media are welcome to interview any of the three doctors who are leading the seminar. Contact David Lewis at lci@lcinews.com
