-- As Congress considers a major budget reconciliation package, local Jewish leaders from Dayenu: A Jewish Call to Climate Action
led a public action outside Senator Casey's Philadelphia office to demand that he support urgently needed investments in a Just, Green Recovery. This past Sunday afternoon, as part of the nationwide #HearTheCall Dayenu campaign, a crowd of over 70 concerned community members from the Greater Philadelphia area raised their voices and blew their shofars, calling on Senator Casey and his colleagues in Congress to hear the clarion call for climate action and justice, and to act now to ensure a swift, just transition to a clean energy future.
"Here in Philadelphia, we face intersecting crises: the pandemic and the economic devastation it has wrought, insidious racial inequity and injustice, and climate destruction at an unfathomable scale,"
said local activist and organizer, Dara Bortman. "But, we have an opportunity to address these overlapping crises. It's become apparent that business-as-usual is dangerous, unsustainable and expensive. We are calling for the upcoming recovery package to include historic investments in resilient, energy efficient buildings, a Clean Energy Standard, the electrification of transportation, and targeted funding for communities impacted by environmental racism. These new investments will lead to a healthier economy, people, and environment and will save money. The extreme weather events we're seeing across the country and the world are expensive and are only getting more expensive and dangerous. The time to act is now."
Amid a summer of ongoing extreme weather events fueled by climate change, including the local floods just blocks from the Senator Casey's office in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida, Dayenu's Hear the Call campaign is mobilizing Jews and their interfaith neighbors to raise their voices and demand that Congress address the climate crisis at the scale that science and justice demands. There is no time left for inaction: Senator Casey must support the investments we need to secure a sustainable, healthy and just future for all, for generations to come.
