AfrosUnidos Partners with Medellin's Secretary of Health Department

AfrosUnidos organized a health event in partnership with Medellin's Secretary of Health department to deliver quality heath care services to migrant families of Moravia.

MEDELLÍN, Colombia - Sept. 14, 2021 - PRLog -- Access to healthcare is a basic human right. Migration, however, has a complicated impact on health, and there are great disparities in the availability, accessibility, and quality of health care services for migrant families of Moravia (Tropical Oasis). To promote better health conditions among the migrants, AfrosUnidos (http://www.afrosunidos.org/) partnered with Medellin's Secretary of Health department to organize a community potluck and health event for the migrant families of Moravia (Tropical Oasis) neighborhood providing: Vaccinations, Eye Exams, and Health Assessments.

AfrosUnidos understand that adequate healthcare is a challenging but achievable community service (http://www.afrosunidos.org/) mission; therefore, in their efforts to combat healthcare inequities amongst the Afro-Colombian population future events have also been scheduled with Medellin's Secretary of Health Department.

When asked about the real purpose of this highly collaborative partnership Katerin Moreno; Community Activist and Secretary of AfrosUnidos, said, "This area and the people who reside here are extremely near and dear to my heart. For the past ten years as an activist, I have accessed the needs and desires of this community, and anytime that organizations like AfrosUnidos and the Secretary of Health seek to provide some form of assistance to the migrant families of Comuna 4, it is greatly appreciated."

The overall objective of AfrosUnidos ways to improve health care access for vulnerable migrants and refugees, support their inclusion and participation, and reduce health inequalities. At its root, the mission of the AfrosUnidos is both medical and moral since it is based on solidarity rather than charity. Furthermore, this partnership serves as a platform for shared voices on the major health issues amongst the migrant families of Moravia.

In addition to health care services, food subsidies were also provided to more than forty (40) families to assist during these tough and challenging times. Assisting their efforts of coping with hunger and malnutrition, allowing them to live nourished and enriched lives. Furthermore, energizing music performances by Afropower Urbano provided fun dance classes to all the residents of the community, allowing a brief respite from their daily stressors.
