KJK Attorneys Stone & Supler Release Podcast Addressing COVID Slide Among StudentsBy: KJK Student & Athlete Defense Group In this episode, Stone and Supler are joined by Dr. Erin Herbruck and Ali Weiss Trotter to talk about the impact COVID has had on students, both socially and academically, in a phenomenon being referred to as the COVID slide. "It is all hands on deck in our schools," explained Dr. Herbruck, a seasoned educator with a background in psychology. "We are investing more time than ever on our social emotional learning in our classrooms, spending time re-acclimating to how you interact with other people, use of space." Stone questioned how far the slide back is taking students. "I think we're going to have to kind of recalibrate what we think of developmentally, and where kids should be for a while," Dr. Herbruck said. "Because it's almost like we have to think a year or so back of where we might expect them to be. And that's the new 'normal' for a developmental student." Asked by Supler about COVID's impact on mental health issues, Trotter, a licensed clinical social worker, explained that a large majority of the children and adolescents currently being referred to therapists is due to the effects of the pandemic. "There's been a significant increase in anxiety and depression among children and adolescents," Listen to the full episode here.
