The second month of Islamic calendar is the month of Safar. It comes after Muharram and before Rabi-Al-Awwal. Its name comes from the Arabic language and means empty, which is in reference to the pre-Islamic times when people used to go out in search of food. The word Safar in Arabic also refers to the hissing sound that is caused by strong winds during this time.

Safar Month Significance

There are some great events associated with Prophet occurred in this month:

1) Safar is the month when the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, moved to Madinah from Makkah

2) In Safar month, the Prophet's daughter, Bibi Fatima got married to Hazrat Ali

3) The battle of Khyber took place between Arabian Jewish tribes and Muslim armies under Prophet Muhammad

4) The battle of Abwaa, which occurred on the second of Safar, 623. A battle was launched by the Prophet and his armies against the Damra tribe. The tribe leader however called for a peace treaty in al-Abwa'.

5) The Grandson of the Prophet, Hasan Ibn Ali (PBUH) attained martyrdom in this month

6) This month also marks the acceptance of Islam by Khalid and Amr bin al-Aas

Some believe the misfortunes attached with the month bring us closer to the Almighty. This month makes you believe in God and become god fearing.
