The packets included:
Mini-flashlights with batteries
Bars of soap,
Some of the recipients took advantage of the free, biodegradable shopping bags that were also passed out, especially those without backpacks.
Some of the clients stopped to chat. One client lost her job as a waitress when COVID-19 caused her restaurant to close. She couch-surfed for a while, but it was difficult with a child. Eventually, she was homeless, and she lost custody of her daughter. Her dream is to regain custody. She's confident she will do so when she finds another job as a waitress. She's not sure how she will find the job because she doesn't have an address, a cell phone, or nice clothes for an interview. But, she is confident.
Another client reported that he sleeps under a tarp in a forested area because he feels the shelters are not safe. He returns each day for meals. He has nothing to do: no cell phone, no TV, no magazines, no car, no home to care for. He stands around the meal pavilion all day, sun or rain, with nothing to do. But, he has his health and he is thankful for that.
Atheists Helping the Homeless, DC is staffed entirely by volunteers. They are entirely dependent upon donations to support their work. They are atheists but are not just atheists. They are citizens. They have moral compasses and ethics. They want to help, to encourage, to guide, to learn, and to receive. They report that they are Beyond Belief, but they have empathy and a sense of community to guide them.
