BOSTON - Aug. 31, 2021 - PRLog -- BOSTON, Ma. — ITIC today announced that for the 13th straight year, the IBM Z and IBM Power Systems maintained the highest server reliability. Lenovo's ThinkSystem, delivered the best uptime among all x86 servers for the eighth straight year. . Huawei's KunLun; Hewlett Packard Enterprise's (HPE) Superdome and Cisco's UCS servers continued to post high reliability scores, despite the global pandemic.

"Server reliability of at least four nines and five nines of uptime is imperative,"  said Laura DiDio, ITIC Principal Analyst.  "A 91% majority said hourly downtime costs over $300,000, and 44% said the cost exceeds one million."

Some 93% of IBM Z users said the mainframe averages 99.9999% and 99.99999% of  fault tolerant uptime. And 90% of IBM Power Systems; Lenovo ThinkSystem; Huawei KunLun and HPE Superdome users said they achieved five and six nines of reliability.

IBM and Lenovo executives offered their perspective on the ITIC reliability poll results.

"For our clients, the security and reliability of IBM Z and IBM Power Systems are essential building blocks for high-performance workloads from core banking transactions, to AI and Blockchain," said Jamie Thomas, General Manager, Strategy and Development, IBM Systems. "As our clients enter Chapter 2 of digital transformation, IBM Systems are best positioned to support the AI and Hybrid Cloud agenda."

"Uptime and reliability are critical to running efficient data centers. Unplanned downtime  has significant impact to an organization's bottom line, costing up to $400K per hour," said Kirk Skaugen, President, Lenovo and Executive Vice President, Lenovo Data Center Group. "For eight consecutive years, Lenovo's x86 ThinkSystem servers received the highest reliability marks – comparable to larger-scale mainframe class competitive systems."

Among the top  findings:
  • Security: Less than one percent – 0.3% - of IBM Z and IBM LinuxONE III servers experienced a successful data breach. Only four percent of IBM Power Systems and Lenovo ThinkSystem users reported their systems were successfully hacked; just five percent of Huawei KunLun and HPE Superdome servers were breached.
  • Server Reliability: IBM z14 and z15 registered just 0.60 seconds of per server monthlydowntime. The IBM POWER8 and POWER9 models had 1.49 minutes of unplanned per server downtime. The Lenovo ThinkSystem and Huawei KunLun platforms each posted 1.51 minutes of unplanned per server outages. Unbranded White box servers were the least reliable with 57 minutes of per server downtime.
