MIT J-WEL welcomes the American School of Marrakesh as newest pK-12 member

The American School of Marrakesh to enhance STEAM program, create Maker Space, and provide professional development through engagement with MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Sept. 1, 2021 - PRLog -- The American School of Marrakesh (ASM) joins the Abdul Latif Jameel World Education Lab (J-WEL) as the newest member of the pK-12 Collaborative. Through J-WEL membership, The American School of Marrakesh joins a community of 26 other schools, universities, non-profits, government agencies, and companies addressing the world's most pressing education challenges and exploring opportunities presented by new educational technologies, effective practices, and emerging scientific understandings of learning.

Via engagement with J-WEL, the American School of Marrakesh will co-develop a STEAM program that engages all levels of students with learning activities; co-design and establish a Maker Space at ASM; and participate in J-WEL events focused on teacher professional development in STEAM curriculum, pedagogy and assessment informed by learning science and effective educational technology practice. J-WEL and ASM expect this work to set the stage for strengthening and modernizing the education infrastructure and practice in the region.

"The MIT/J-WEL collaboration provides ASM access to, and the opportunity to work with, world-class experts, programs, and colleagues that position the school as a leader in transformational change in Africa to benefit our students, Morocco, and the world," remarked Dr. Casey Asato, ASM Head of School.

The American School of Marrakesh will join other members at upcoming J-WEL events, which bring together representatives of member organizations with MIT faculty and researchers. Through seminars, presentations, and hands-on work, MIT participants support member efforts to transform educational systems and develop solutions applicable across global contexts. The American School of Marrakesh will exchange ideas and best practices with global affiliates of J-WEL, working toward collaborative solutions in education challenges.

An initiative of MIT and Community Jameel, The Abdul Latif Jameel World Education Lab (http://jwel.mit.edu) promotes excellence and transformation in education at MIT and globally by engaging educators, technologists, policymakers, societal leaders, employers, and employees. Through in-person and online collaborations, workshops, research, and information-sharing events, J-WEL member organizations—including schools, universities, NGO's, government agencies, and companies—work with MIT faculty and staff to address global opportunities for scalable change in education.
