NAGS HEAD, N.C. - Aug. 23, 2021 - PRLog -- What exactly is the art of etching? Meet David Hunter. He's a master in the art of printmaking… or the process of creating etchings.

When you buy an etching, you don't always get to see all of the steps involved in creating it…from sketch to plate to press.

"When I created this limited edition 'Hatteras Memories' etching," says master artist David Hunter, "I started with a pencil sketch on paper to get an idea of the image. Then I take a clean smooth polished zinc plate. I paint an acid-resistant coating on the plate."

"I take a sharp needle and do a freehand drawing through the coating so each line exposes the plate until the whole image is done," explains Hunter.

Hunter puts the plate in nitric acid… the lines recess into the plate as the nitric acid bites away at the metal, etching the drawing into the plate.

"The plate is not the artwork," says Hunter. "The print from the plate is the final definitive artwork."  He smears a special ink over the plate and into the etched lines. He runs the plate through his printing press and creates original etched art.
