Retired orthopedic surgeon Dr. Anthony Paul Sterling looks back at his life in New York City and finds plenty of real and imagined experiences to write about. Some of his stories in Don't Blame the Rats are sentimental, while others are certainly eye-opening or humorous.

"One Year Later"

Our family came here to observe the tragic spot where Americans had been murdered. I had no idea how I would react once I set foot on this hallowed ground. Nothing I had heard or read could have prepared me for what I actually experienced. The first shock was the utter devastation of the spot where the Twin Towers had existed: smoke coming from the broken metal and brick; the smell of death and staleness which was pervasive; the ash that literally covered everything; the faces and demeanor of thousands of people of every color, country, age. The only thought that occupied my very being was, "Why?" Was that naivete to ask why a great country like ours had to live through such a terrible catastrophe?

Then there's the story about young love:

"Who Can Explain?"

Las Vegas at last. What a fabulous place for a honeymoon! How long had it been since first they met in an art appreciation seminar in college at New York University? She was 18 and dressed in her native African robes and headdress, a transfer student from Uganda. She sat next to a 19-year-old, clean-shaven, bright-eyed Jewish boy who believed he could make a difference in a very big, chaotic, competitive world. What brought them together? But of course, it had to be God winking again: so mischievous in His own way; sending out messages about love conquering all; hard work creating its own success story.

Anthony Paul Sterling, M.D., Ph.D., states: "I was born in a ghetto in New York City. I studied hard and became an orthopedic surgeon." Now retired and living in Florida, he was inspired to write this book by his granddaughter, because of the way she speaks to animals. Besides writing, he is an aficionado of competitive martial arts.
