Copper alloys have been long sought after for their impressive antimicrobial properties. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced on February 10, 2021, that copper alloys are at least 95.6 percent copper can be sold and distributed with certain important claims. That being, copper alloys can disable and stop in its tracks viruses that come in contact with the metal (registration 82012-1). While specific testing shows that certain viruses die faster, viruses may last up to approximately 2 hours instead of approximately 28 days on other surfaces.  The Copper Development Association helped show that high-percentage copper alloys continuously disable viruses when making contact with the metal. This discovery allows products with antimicrobial copper alloys to be marketed with the virus-killing claim. In addition, the RWMA Class 1 Copper Zirconium UNS C15000 is an excellent resistance welding material with very high softening temperatures. A small addition of Zirconium to copper improves its resistance to softening and resists deformation at high temperatures where normal copper would otherwise soften rapidly. On a 1-inch diameter rod the minimum hardness Rockwell is 65 and a minimum electrical conductivity of 80% IACS. Cadi Company offers high performance Copper Zirconium RWMA Class 1 material in rod, bar, plate and special sizes.
