Ira SenGupta Honored as 2021 Language Access Champion

WASHINGTON - April 14, 2021 - PRLog -- Ira SenGupta has been awarded as the 2021 Language Access Champion by the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC).  A founding board member of the Cross Cultural Health Care Program who served as Executive Director for 25 years, she continues to serve CCHP today as Senior Advisor.

Ira received her Language Access Champion Award on the second day of the NCIHC's Annual Membership Meeting (AMM) on April 10, 2021.  Although the NCIHC held the AMM as a virtual event for the first time this year, the award was presented in person by NCIHC Treasurer, Cynthia Roat, at the CCHCP headquarters in Seattle, Washington.

In addition to being an active contributor to the field of culturally and linguistically appropriate services, Ira is a recognized national trainer, researcher, and facilitator of community conversations.  An inspirational speaker, she brings to her works a genuine passion and an energetic style.

Ira is multilingual and has deep roots in the communities accessing health and social services.  She is a Fellow of the combined Leadership program of the Disparities Solutions Center at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

She has most recently served on the two national committees on standards for training in the language access field.  Most notably, Ira conducted three significant pieces of qualitative research that were both national and local in scope with the goal of examining the barriers our emerging communities face in accessing health care.

NCIHC President Rosanna Balistreri noted, " Ira's work has impacted the lives of many people who have fully dedicated to culturally and linguistically appropriate services in health care.  As a pioneer of one of the earliest national training for healthcare interpreters, she has paved the way for many professionals who are still recognized today as seasoned trainers, interpreters, and language access advocates.  The entire NCIHC Board, as well as our members, are deeply thankful to Ira for her valuable contribution to language access over many years."
