BURLINGTON, Mass. - March 23, 2021 - PRLog -- Every March, the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) leads the nation in recognizing Brain Injury Awareness Month, a time to acknowledge and support the millions of Americans impacted by brain injury (BI). The theme for the 2021 awareness campaign is More Than My Brain Injury.

Every nine seconds, someone in the United States sustains a brain injury. Estimates indicate that 5.3 million Americans, 1 in every 60 people, live with brain injury-related disabilities. Many people with disabilities have their lives defined for them. The #MoreThanMyBrainInjury campaign gives individuals a chance to overcome those definitions, allowing them to tell their own stories and change the narrative of their lives.

The campaign goals are to increase understanding of brain injury as a chronic condition, reduce the stigma associated with having a brain injury, showcase the diversity of injury and the demographics of the community and improve care and support for individuals with brain injury and their families.

Physical therapists help people with brain injury regain their physical function, relearn daily tasks and restore their fitness and wellness. They work to improve motor function, minimize disabilities and reestablish normal movement patterns to maximize the patient's independence, safety and ability to return to their prior level of function. They develop goals and individualized treatment plans that address the challenges and functional limitations associated with the injury, and they work closely with patients and their family members providing education and training.
