GLEN ECHO, Md. - Jan. 25, 2021 - PRLog -- Glen Echo, MD: February is National Bird Feeding month, a designation that began in 1989, when the Wild Bird Centers of America, Inc. (WBCA) established the National Bird Feeding Society, the official host of the month. A period of harsh weather and minimal food supply, February is a great time to spotlight the need to feed your backyard birds.

While roughly half of North American birds head south for winter, many birds stay determinedly in their year-round territories. Small songbirds eat more food in the winter than in the summer, making bird feeders a valuable resource this time of year.

Studies have shown an increase in winter survival of birds who visit feeders and help boost birds' breeding success. It is important to keep feeders filled during winter months, and to include suet and peanuts to provide the extra calories birds need to keep warm.

"The benefits of feeding birds are significant, not just for the birds themselves, but also for those of us who feed them," said George Petrides, Jr., CEO of Wild Bird Centers of America, Inc. "What we give to nature, we get back in return. Feeding and caring for our backyard winter birds and animals gives us a sense of discovery, purpose and joy during the colder winter months."

Bird feeders provide a stable food source, regardless of the weather. And, as habitat declines, bird-friendly yards help maintain bird health and increase bird populations. Feeders come in various sizes and styles to fit outdoor spaces both small and large and are designed to hold different types of bird food to attract and support a variety of bird species.

"Feeding birds is a simple, fun, relaxing hobby that anyone can take part in, at any age," said Petrides.

"As more people learn and work from home, bird feeding is a perfect pastime that can provide a respite from the screen and stress while deepening your connection with nature."

Wild Bird Centers is a nationally recognized brand and successful chain of stores focused on promoting the natural hobby of bird feeding and watching. WBC offers a complete line of quality products designed to deliver beauty, color and a better backyard bird feeding experience to its customers, young and old.
