1st Long-Form "Epic" Poem About Hollywood Finds Readers On Instagram
"The Age Of Light Enshrined", a multigenerational epic poem about Hollywood invokes a grand tradition poetic storytelling to explore how the moving image shapes our world
The poem began releasing in mid December of 2020 on the social media platform, which is known to harbor a lively and engaged poetry community. Each Monday through Thursday the poem's author, Zachary Ramsey, has been dropping a new page from the voluminous work. According to the author the poem is currently scheduled to finish its Instagram publication run by mid 2022 and will reach a length of some 250+ pages upon completion.
The work itself opens with the Lumière Brothers and recalls the foundations of cinema… including the Lumière's bouts with Thomas Edison. The poem then goes on to introduce William Sommerfeld, the founder of a fictionalized Hollywood dynasty. The work uses poetic verse to weave real historical people, places and events into a fictionalized story about one of Hollywood's oldest film families.
When asked for comment the poem's author, Zachary Ramsey, said:
"The Age of Light Enshrined was undertaken in the spirit of those great epic poems that speak of and through the generations. The story told is a dynastic telling of our current global media landscape as told by a 4th generation descended of one of Hollywood's oldest film families. The work seeks to explore, examine and comment on our times... bringing into focus how completely the moving image has shaped our shared view of the world around us.
The approach in releasing the book first over Instagram is an attempt to make the work both accessible and conversational. It is a living text and like the great oral poems of antiquity the story is designed to have a conversational component."
Mr. Ramsey is a poet and filmmaker himself. He has published 4 books of poems (Forward to An American Odyssey, Past The Precipice, Fields Of Life & The Centeneia) and released his debut documentary feature, "The Great Open", in November of 2019.
