Patreon is an American membership platform that provides business tools for content creators to run a subscription service. It helps creators and artists earn a monthly income by providing rewards and perks to their subscribers. Patreon was created by musician and YouTuber Jack Conte, along with Sam Yam, in 2013.

It is a membership website that allows creators to monetize their work and earn directly from their fans. These fans (patrons) pay a monthly subscription fee to gain access to a variety of content, whether it is extended viewership, exclusive creations, private privileges, and other perks. Patreon members can use a variety of tools to optimize and monetize their content.

It is the opportunity for 'regular folks' to take control back from the big media behemoths and chart their own destinies.

Patreon takes back 5–12% of all revenue while Substack takes 10%, in addition to fees. Patreon's pricing structure is a tiered system, depending on the member's needs. New members have the option of choosing a Patreon Lite service where they are charged 5% on revenues earned.

This basic plan leaves out some key features, such as backing tiers. Patreon Pro, the next plan up, allows members to enjoy all the main features of the platform, with Patreon taking 8% of revenues earned. Finally, there is also Patreon premium that provides personalized support and sees Patreon taking 12% of revenues earned.
