HBA DOC and BuildSense Partner for LE Meyers Scholarship Fund
By: HBA of Durham, Orange & Chatham Counties
BuildSense Partner Leon Meyers recently retired after a 50-year career in the construction industry. He joined the HBA DOC in 1983, serving over the years as both HBA DOC Board Member and President. Meyers was recognized with numerous accolades over the years, including HBA DOC Builder of the Year, Director of the Year, and Recruiter of the Year. He was inducted into the NC Housing Hall of Fame Inductee in 2018.
According to Meyers' BuildSense teammates, his legacy is his commitment to creating a better community in which we all live and work. Meyers partnered with local planning and permitting jurisdictions to ensure safe and effective building codes/practices, while delivering a lasting positive influence on the local regulatory building environment. He has also been an ongoing supporter to numerous charitable organizations. Most notably, Meyers' was involved with Habitat for Humanity of Durham, where he served as a Board Member, Charitable Event Sponsor, and builder of three Habitat homes. With all of this in mind, BuildSense is pleased to have endowed the LE Meyers Trade Education Scholarship fund through the HBA DOC Foundation, Inc.
Throughout the last 20 years the HBA DOC Foundation, a 501c(3) charitable organization, has awarded over $275,000 to area high school students pursuing a degree in the trades. The seven-member HBA Foundation Board of Directors works as a separate entity of the larger association, with three of these members having served since the inception of the Foundation. "Meeting these students, the future of our industry, is why I have served on this board for over 20 years" states Michele Myers of M Squared Builders, the Vice Chair/Treasurer of the HBA Foundation. HBA CEO and Foundation Executive Director Holly Fraccaro shares, "I could not be more proud to serve the HBA of Durham, Orange & Chatham Counties and its Foundation. The charitable spirit of this association was the ultimate decision-making factor for me in accepting this position."
Due to the pandemic, the HBA DOC was unable to hold its annual Casino Night Fundraiser, which typically raises $15,000+ to award to deserving area students. Donations are being gratefully accepted. To donate to the LE Meyers Scholarship Fund, visit this link (https://members.hbadoc.com/
