But, over a relatively short period of time, it became an upscale residential neighborhood. Located in the Lower Keys, about twenty miles to the east of Key West, it is today a bedroom community. However, being one of the best places to live in the Florida Keys.
The Summerland Key lifestyle can best be described as quiet and serene. Home to the Brinton Environmental Center of the Florida National High Adventure Sea Base, there's a small airplane landing strip that's not too far away from the Overseas Highway.
Although this is primarily a residential community, it's what's nearby that makes it a great place to call home. (This way, residents of Summerland Key maintain a private oasis, away from the many tourist destinations right around it.
Things to Do Around Summerland Key Florida
Two of the biggest draws in the area are Bahia Honda Key and Little Torch Key. Bahia Honda State Park was established decades ago in 1961. It is a 524-acre park and is home to one of the deepest natural water channels in the island archipelago of the entire Florida Keys. Little Torch Key offers a few restaurants and hotels, with its claim to fame being a favorite fishing destination of President Harry S. Truman.
Of course, being in the Lower Keys, there's always something to see and do in and around Summerland Key. Examples include biking, boating, sailing, scuba diving, snorkeling, paddleboarding, sunbathing, hiking, camping, and plenty of live entertainment and arts and cultural activities that are found throughout the Florida Keys.

The weather in Summerland Key is something that must be experienced in person to believe. Winters, such as they are, from December through February, are super mild. Meaning, temperatures rarely go above 50 to 60°, and of course, there is no snow or ice, or dull gray skies. Summer in Summerland key is a warm and balmy season, but there's typically a nice breeze flowing from either the Gulf of Mexico or from the Atlantic ocean. Spring and fall are simply delightful, being nice enough to extend outdoor activity enjoyment through almost every day of the year.
