Datum Datacentres adds carbon offsetting to its green credentials
By: Datum Datacentres
As well as supplying Datum with energy from renewable sources, this new agreement includes full carbon offsetting using forestry products from the Southern Cardamom REDD+ project. The Cardamom Rainforest Landscape is one of the last unfragmented rainforests remaining in Southeast Asia and is a critical part of the Indo-Burma Biodiversity Hotspot. Using global best practices for forest protection and community development, the project prevents more than three metric tonnes of carbon dioxide per year and protects over 400,000 hectares of tropical rainforest in South-West Cambodia.
The datacentre services market is growing fast. This growth is driven by the increased usage of cloud platforms and data intensive applications, and the rising demand for software as a service (SaaS) solutions to support an increasingly distributed workforce during the coronavirus pandemic. However, datacentres are estimated to account for 1% of worldwide energy usage so they are increasingly under pressure to take action to reduce their environmental impact.
This led Datum to investigate the most sustainable energy solutions in line with its commitment to being a 'green' datacentre facility. Following advice from the Beond Group, an energy markets consultancy, Datum identified Hartree Solutions, with its renewable energy and carbon offsetting options, as the ideal partner.
