Ancient Tides: Joe Riley's Summer Adventure and His Mystical Quest takes 12-year-old Joe on a wild journey from the rugged coastline of North Devon to a fantasy world where nothing is impossible.

An isolated cottage in North Devon is home to Joe, his Mum, and his two younger sisters. In the cottage, left to his family by his late grandfather, Joe is totally bored. He has nothing to do but watch his sisters play with dolls.

"Mum had told us that the cottage dated back to Queen Elizabeth the First's time, so it was over five hundred years old: no wonder it was dirty."

When Joe finds an old wooden box with a roll of parchment inside showing a map of the area and some old writing, a new world opens up for him. Dragons fly overhead and a sea monster rescues him. The area is populated with fairies, unicorns, and a little green man seeking some lost stones. The search for the stones ends with Joe taking a time portal to visit his late grandfather.

"With my escape plan now hampered by my injury, I became very aware of two major things. The first was that the tide was coming in so fast now that it was breaking over the rocks I was crawling along, and the second was that whatever had been in the cave was now out in the sea swimming, having caught a glimpse of its large body and hearing the plop as it dived into the crashing waves. Somehow, I knew I had to try and make it to the steps, otherwise I was going to drown and nobody would know. Mum would, but how long would it be before she'd realise I was gone? Tears began to run down my cheeks. I didn't want my life to end so soon, as this had been the best day of my life up to now."

Life is no longer boring for Joe.

Lesley Glover grew up in the Midlands in Coventry, and then moved to London and to Kent. "My next move took me to Devon, and I now live about 10 minutes away from the area of Hangman's Hill that is mentioned in the book." Stuck in traffic driving home from Devon, "I began thinking about the story to relieve the boredom and it grew from there." This is her third book.
