Brownsville Middle Schools Break New Barriers

Brownsville middle schools offer cutting-edge coding courses
BROWNSVILLE, Texas - Sept. 4, 2020 - PRLog -- While many schools across the nation still don't recognize computer science as a core literacy, the educators of Brownsville Independent School District (BISD) are responding to the challenges of COVID-19 with visionary leadership. Through a new partnership with Mastery Coding, a Los Angeles-based company founded by a California Teacher of the Year award winner, 10 Brownsville middle schools will be offering cutting-edge coding courses to ensure their students own the computer science skills necessary to be successful in a world changed by technology.

Brownsville's decision reflects an understanding that times have changed and their curriculum must change accordingly. This is why the students of BISD will be learning HTML, CSS and Javascript in addition to the traditional "3R's" of reading, writing and arithmetic.

"While unemployment has hit historic levels as a result of the pandemic, people who have the skills to code are discovering that there is actually a robust availability of employment opportunities due to a talent shortage of qualified people who know how to do the computer programming many, many companies need," said Alan Sitomer, CEO of Mastery Coding. "Brownsville is to be saluted for proactively making sure that its future graduates are afforded the chance to attain high-paying jobs in a high growth industry by providing pragmatic, meaningful, standards-based education. It's a win for the schools, a win for the teachers, and most significantly, a win for the kids."

Dr. Juan Chavez, CTE Director for the Brownsville Independent School District, mentioned that there are many skills their students will benefit from learning to code such as problem-solving, future job opportunities, critical thinking, creativity, and resiliency. He continued, "We are fortunate to have partnered with a company who understands our needs in preparing our future generation with the proper tools for success in a thriving, technological world."

BISD, a district with over 7,000 employees and almost 46,000 students, has long been committed to fostering innovation, promoting digital literacy, and supporting connectivity for its families. Serving the largest city and student population in the Rio Grande Valley, the leadership teams at BISD recognize how critical it is for its students to attain the coding skills which are redefining society and the workforce.
