MIAMI - Aug. 16, 2020 - PRLog -- Musical Poetry Is Written for Romantics and Realists

Phonotactics: The Sounds of Poetry features 109 poems that span the gamut from Renaissance sonnets and villanelles (19-line poems with two rhymes throughout), to philosophical musings on the world's great thinkers.

Says author Barbara Sher Tinsley, "Sound and how sound works are what I am driven by in writing poetry. I use sound to create feeling, meaning; to communicate what cannot be done as well using prose or prosaic language. Hence, my poems include a wide variety of forms, styles, vocabulary – occasionally, not English! – all chosen to intensify the meaning conveyed."

She adds, "The connotation of how sound works provides the key to my poetry. I choose sounds to intensify meaning; to evoke memories shared or personal; to create the illusion of immediacy and intimacy, of being there, not only at the scenes I describe, but in the souls of poet and reader."

One would not expect a romantic lyricist to concern herself with a narrow (i.e., phonemic) interpretation of the word phonotactics. Instead, in her poem, "A Splendid Day," she uses the connotative meaning of the word to describe how she makes sound enhance the music (sound again!) in her poetry. Grand phonic tactics, indeed.
