By: Cary Nagdeman A Medicare Advantage health care plan can get a rating between 1 and 5 stars. A 5-star rating is considered excellent. Ratings help individuals compare plans based on quality and a provider's performance. Medicare updates these ratings each fall for the following year. Ratings are evaluated annually and are posted by CMS in October. A plan's rating can change based on consumer surveys. Enrollment, an individual interested in a Five (5) Star Medicare Advantage Plan can switch from their current Advantage Plan to a 5 Star Medicare Cost Plan or Medicare Prescription Drug Plan once annually between December 8th and November 30th. That allows a subscriber that desires a Five (5) Star rated Plan almost 10 months to change their Medicare Advantage Plan without incurring a penalty. A Five Star Plan is great for subscribers who remain in the same location that their plan covers. If a subscriber moves from a Five (5) Star Medicare Advantage Plan that has drug coverage they may lose their prescription drug coverage. They may have to wait until their next enrollment opportunity to get drug coverage (Part D) and may be subject to paying a late enrollment penalty.
