-- Ayushya Homa is an auspicious ceremony which is performed to ward off evil influences present in a child's life immediately following its birth, thereby ensuring longevity and good health. It can also be performed anytime later in life, not necessarily on the first birth of the baby. It is said to have been emerged from the prayers of Markandeya.
Rishi Markandeya, the son of Saint Mrukandu, was bound to die at sixteen years. On his last day, he prayed to Lord Shiva and clasped the idol/linga. He began chanting the Mrityunjaya Stotram and prayed Lord Shiva to protect him. His prayers worked and when Yama, the God of death, threw the noose around Markandeya's neck, it covered the linga! Lord Shiva was furious on Yama and spared his life applying a condition that Markandeya would be set free from death.
