CARBONELL AWARDS Salutes 37 Potential Winners from Miami-Dade County

MIAMI - July 10, 2020 - PRLog -- (South Florida – July 11, 2020) Donald R. Walters, Esq., board president of the Carbonell Awards, South Florida's Theatre & Arts Honors, today saluted the Special Award winner, the Jack Zink Memorial Scholarship winner, and the 35 nominees from Miami-Dade County.

The Carbonell Awards is now in its 44th year of honoring excellence in South Florida theater. Out of more than 80 shows that opened at regional theaters, 62 were eligible for nominations. In addition to the 35 Miami-Dade nominations, Palm Beach County theaters earned 44, and Broward County theaters garnered 21.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 44th annual Carbonell Awards will now be virtual. Set for Monday, August 3, starting at 7:30 pm,  Broward Center for the Performing Arts is graciously hosting the broadcast through its YouTube Channel (www.youtube.com/channel/UCwYGa-RlNvCuRe34c0TxntA). One of this year's four Special Awards, The Ruth Foreman Award, is being given to The Amparo Experience, an experienced theatrical journey in Downtown Miami that took the audience straight into the heart of one family's fight for love, country, legacy and the truth behind the real Havana Club Rum.  The reviews were stunning. People Magazine called it "Miami's hottest ticket," and Forbes hailed the production as a "theatrical masterpiece."

In addition, one of the three winners of this year's Jack Zink Memorial Student Scholarships is Amaris Rios, who has dedicated herself to musical theater training in Boston, New York City and Miami.

The 35 Carbonell nominations from Miami-Dade are divided between five theaters: Zoetic Stage (20), Actors' Playhouse (8), Miami New Drama (5) and 1 each for City Theatre and GableStage.

The single show with the most nominations is Zoetic Stage's Sweeney Todd with 10, and the theatre also is tied for second place with seven nominations for The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Finally, four of the five shows nominated for Best Ensemble are from Miami-Dade: The Children, GableStage; Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash, Actors' Playhouse; Viva La Parranda!, Miami New Drama; and The Wolves, Zoetic Stage.

The Carbonell Award's virtual ceremony is being produced by Fantel Music, including Carbonell Award winner Caryl Fantel, who has been part of the award show's production team for 12 years and is a two-time Silver Palm Award-winning music director, pianist and vocal coach; and her daughter Alyssa Fantel, an actress, acting coach and award-winning playwright.
