Jefferson's Ferry Paints the Campus Purple for Alzheimer's Awareness Month

SOUTH SETAUKET, N.Y. - June 24, 2020 - PRLog -- Jefferson's Ferry Life Plan Community is painting the campus purple to support Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month in June, while residents and staff raise money to support research for Alzheimer's disease.

Just two weeks into the month-long fundraising effort, $3,790 in sums of $5 and $10 and a handful of $100 and $200 donations has been raised. This amount is more than half of the $5,000 target goal.

In exchange for their online or credit card donation, residents are presented with a purple and yellow paper flower to hang on their door -- a great conversation starter, says Kaylin Peterson, director of philanthropy at Jefferson's Ferry.

"Neighbors see the purple flowers, ask about them, and they usually make their own donation," she says. "The impact of this disease resonates with everyone, including staff members. Along with raising awareness, we're raising funds to support research."

More than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's and deaths from Alzheimer's have increased 146% between 2000 and 2018, according to the Alzheimer's Association.

Staff members have raised about $600 for the Alzheimer's Association through Jefferson's Ferry's Casual for a Cause fundraiser, which allows staff to pay $5 for a voucher that allows them to wear jeans on a Friday.

Fundraising efforts conclude on June 30. Peterson says, she's certain residents will exceed the $5,000 goal. Visit www.alz.org for more information.
