Emancipation Park Conservancy Launches Audio Guide for Emancipation Park on Geotourist App
Visitors Will Learn About the Historic Legacy of Houston's Oldest Public Park on Their Mobile Devices
Juneteenth celebrates the culture and legacy of African Americans throughout history. It commemorates the anniversary of former slaves' emancipation on June 19, 1865, the date that came to be known as 'Juneteenth."
The 148th Annual Juneteenth Celebration hosted by Emancipation Park will focus on preserving the community's traditions of unity, music, dance, and commerce. This year, due to COVID-19, the celebration will be virtual and will be celebrated June 2nd – 19th.
The GPS-led audio guide will lead visitors to the monuments of the founders, formerly enslaved community leaders from the Third and Fourth Ward of Houston, who united residents and civic organizations to commemorate the anniversary of their emancipation by building a park of their own.
While walking in its beautifully landscaped grounds, visitors will experience the Park's thoughtful architecture and state-of the art recreational facilities that promote freedom, expressed in Liberation, Release, Opportunity and Creativity.
Emancipation Park and its historic buildings have been designated Protected Landmark by the City of Houston. The Park is part of the UNESCO Slave Route Project and the Emancipation National Historical Trail.
The audio guide is available for download on the Geotourist website (https://geotourist.com/
