New technology game changer for Sydney heart patients

SYDNEY - May 31, 2020 - PRLog -- Inner West Sydney heart patients now have access to new state-of-the-art technology that provides faster procedures and cuts radiation exposure in half.

The recently built cardiac catheter lab at Strathfield Private Hospital is home to a new $1 million diagnostic image-guided therapy system that visualises arteries and chambers of the heart.

That new technology, coupled with hospital's hybrid operating theatre which allows surgeons to use state of the art x-ray equipment during specialist procedures, has helped reinforce the hospital's reputation for delivering some of the best cardiac services in the state.

Cardiologist Professor Ian Wilcox, who helped set up the hospital's cardiac unit 30 years ago, said the equipment allowed the hospital to perform complex procedures, including resynchronisation of the heart.

The new lab includes a Phillips Azurion system which is used for both diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in heart patients.

Cardiologist Professor Mark Adams said it was more efficient and reduced radiation exposure by about half for patients and staff.

"It is believed to be the most up-to-date equipment in the Inner West region and will really help with high risk cases and complex coronary procedures where very high-resolution images are required," he said.

Prof Wilcox said the system allowed specialists to perform complex procedures that previously had to be treated elsewhere.

"We have an ageing population in this region and it's important they feel confident they will receive top quality care and have access to the most up-to-date medical equipment within their own community," he said.

The hospital had rigorously recorded outcomes on cardiac patients since the unit was set up 30 years ago and it had amongst the best results in the state.

"The quality of the surgery done at Strathfield is better than it would be elsewhere in many cases," he said.

"You can get above average care in a very caring environment."

Strathfield Private Hospital CEO, Sally Cameron said the new Cardiac Catheter Lab would ensure its reputation as an exceptional centre for heart disease would continue.

"The lab offers a full range of both mainstream and complex cardiac interventions including diagnostic procedures and treatment for conditions including heart disease and cardiac arrhythmias," Ms Cameron said.

"Doctors who have used the new system are extremely satisfied with the quality and capability of the equipment."

Strathfield Private Hospital, which performed Australia's first private heart surgeries,  has been providing cardiac services for patients throughout NSW for 25 years.

It also offers a comprehensive range of specialty services including orthopaedics, urology, breast cancer surgery, endoscopy, ENT, colorectal surgery and bariatric surgery.
