Serving Seniors Meals During COVID-19 Pandemic

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - May 28, 2020 - PRLog -- Thanks to hundreds of individual donors and local foundations, Meals on Wheels of the Palm Beaches raised more than $250,000 to guarantee their service of nutritious meals to homebound seniors was not interrupted during the coronavirus pandemic.

These critical funds have helped the nonprofit organization provide seven days of fresh-frozen meals, with three breakfast meals, each week to 300 seniors since March.

"The support we have received – both in financial contributions as well as in-kind donations – has been remarkable," said Pamela Calzadilla, Meals on Wheels of the Palm Beaches president and CEO. "We are truly grateful and amazed by the outstanding generosity that has poured in from our community."

Grants received from local foundations include: Bank of America Foundation, Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties, Lost Tree Foundation, Quantum Foundation, United Way of Palm Beach County, and several Country Club Community Foundations.

"Because we don't accept government funding, the collective donations from individuals and foundations have been extremely helpful and greatly appreciated. The community has really kept us afloat," Calzadilla said.

Since seniors are classified as high-risk during the pandemic, Meals on Wheels of the Palm Beaches is following the advice of the CDC and the Florida Department of Health closely and continues to avoid contact within six feet to maintain social distancing while deliveries are being made by staff.

"The transition back to regular distributions of daily hot meals with volunteers will be slow in order to safely and successfully provide nutritious meals to our seniors, including many who have no other way of receiving food," Calzadilla said. "We hope financial contributions will continue as we take this journey over the next couple of months."
