LOS ANGELES & WESTMINSTER, U.K. - May 16, 2020 - PRLog -- The world has always faced a shortage of nurses, but the arrival of COVID-19 brought a new complexity to this shortage. In addition to causing a severe state of pandemonium, the COVID-19 pandemic has transformed healthcare and nursing in general. Fortunately, in 2014, Mona Clayton, RN, realized the need to combat the nursing shortage by creating mentoring tools for success. Specifically, she began applying these tools among single mothers of underserved communities that lacked sufficient education and awareness of the nursing pathway. She provided seminars and engaged seasoned nursing professionals to help support the cause in South Central Los Angeles, a community where Clayton lived. She reports, "When growing up, the idea of becoming a nurse was far-fetched."

"My passion for mentoring nursing students and bringing awareness to the profession have always been important to me," states Clayton. "I recognized that nurses need to have lower patient ratios, and I also recognized how wonderful it is to be a registered nurse, especially during this time. Working the frontline as an RN during this crisis has given me greater appreciation for my fellow colleagues and what we do." Inspired by the impact that nurses have on the community, she developed The Nurses Pub, a non-profit organization with the mission to inspire, empower, and develop a global community of future nurses (www.thenursespub.org).

COVID-19 has presented an increased challenge among the nursing community and fueled Clayton's desire to accelerate the building of future nurses in particular single parents. According to the 2011 UK census, "18.9% of Black households were made up of a single parent with dependent children." "There is a specific need to encourage single parents in nursing school to move forward in spite of the obstacles they face," states Clayton, so she created the Facebook page entitled SING (Single Parents' Interactive Nursing Group).

The coronavirus has demonstrated that nurses are the epicenter of healthcare worldwide.
"Their resilience and bravery are increasingly apparent today, and I am proud to be one of them," Clayton states. "Help support our mission for building the nursing community. We all will need a great nurse one day!"
