Local Pet Resort Offers Community "Pet
Therapy" During Shelter In Place

(Sparks, NV )--(May 2, 2020) Spanish Springs Pet Resort offers residents dog therapy-style retreat in effort to combat mental health issues stemming from COVID-19 isolation, as high adoption rates leave shelters empty.

COVID-19 has led to increased adoption rates and nearly empty shelters across the country, as those forced to socially distance have elected to do so with a pet companion. In response to many residents not having a way to interact with these animals, Spanish Springs Pet Resort is offering 'dog therapy relaxation' to combat mental health issues like loneliness, depression, and anxiety.

A recent article referenced a Pethealth database that covers about 1,400 shelters ( and organizations around the country and outlined that pet adoptions are up 102% from the prior week and 100% from last year. Additionally, the article mentioned that "fosters are up 193% from the prior week and 197% compared to this time last year." -- USA Today (

The resort is welcoming families that desire a dog park experience as a form of alternative pet therapy. Simply playing with dogs has been shown to elevate oxytocin and dopamine ( and creates positive feelings and bonding, according to a number of recent studies.

"In this crisis, it's critical that we support each other. We want our neighbors to know they are not alone in this. Social distance is possible while enjoying positive and inspiring activities with pets," says Spanish Springs co-owner Clyde Stofer. The small business owners hope that their effort will be recognized by other pet care facilities worldwide and will help spur similar supportive actions in other communities.  He also encourages families to stop by and meet their mascot "Otis" – the cow who thinks he's a lap dog!

Registration for Spanish Springs is required and can be done so on their website Calls are welcome should anyone need assistance. Those without dogs are encouraged to reach out directly for volunteer opportunities.

Spanish Springs Pet Resort exists to be a resource within their community. The business serves as a hub for healthy pet care and contributes to local humane societies by raising money for animals in need, rescuing pets, donating training, and helping with the re-homing experience. Their slogan is "A Tired Pet Is A Good And Happy Pet."
