PHOENIX - April 21, 2020 - PRLog -- In Arizona, since 2009, there has been a 19% increase in accidents and a 25% increase in fatalities. According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, in 2018:
  • 127,056 total crashes occurred in Arizona.
  • 916 crashes were fatal
  • Approximately 2.77 persons were killed each day
  • There were 146 persons injured every day
  • Motor vehicle crashes resulted in $19.349 billion in economic losses to Arizona

WHEN AND WHERE ACCIDENTS OCCUR

It's important to know which counties have a high number of fatal accidents before you decide to drive around Arizona. According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, in 2018:
  • 491 fatal car accidents occurred in Maricopa County.
  • 124 fatal car accidents occurred in Pima County.
  • 72 fatal car accidents occurred in Pinal County.
  • 51 fatal car accidents occurred in Navajo County.
  • 49 fatal car accidents occurred in Coconino County.

As for the most dangerous roadway types in Arizona, the Arizona Department of Transportation reported that in 2018:
  • 79% of fatal accidents occurred on dry roads.
  • 71% of fatal accidents occurred on straight roads.
  • 7% of fatal accidents occurred in downhill roads.

Additionally, the Arizona Department of Transportation reported that in 2018:
  • 72% of fatal accidents occurred on clear, sunny days.
  • 58% of fatal accidents occurred at night (6pm–6am).
  • 40% of fatal accidents occurred on the weekends.

COMMON CAUSES OF MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENTS

According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, out of the 127,056 total crashes in 2018:
  • 16.7% were caused by speeding.
  • 8.7% were caused by failing to yield.
  • 3.5% were caused by following too closely.
  • 3.5% were caused by unsafe lane changes.
  • 2.1% were caused by failing to stay in the proper lane.
  • 2.1% were caused by disregarding traffic signals.
  • 1.9% were caused by improper turning.
  • .4% were caused by running stop signs.
