Social distancing may cause as many problems as it solves in los angeles

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. & LOS ANGELES - April 8, 2020 - PRLog -- We're all doing our best to maintain social distance during the coronavirus pandemic. But too much isolation can wreak havoc on our physical, mental and emotional states which in turn suppresses immunity, making us more vulnerable to disease — not to mention depression and anxiety. Staying connected by phone and online, finding at-home exercise routines and other techniques for physical engagement such as self-massage are exactly what we need to keep ourselves physically, mentally, and emotionally strong during this global health crisis.

"My phone has been ringing off the hook with clients asking for advice on how to manage pain and stress when they can't come in for their appointments," says Michael Greenspan, owner of Massage Revolution's Back and Neck Relief Center, voted #1 massage center in Los Angeles. "This extended isolation is really taking its toll."

As a neuromuscular therapist who's been in the massage business for nearly 30 years, Greenspan knows a thing or two about stress management. Here are his top tips for relieving pain and anxiety when you can't get in for your massage appointment:

•   To alleviate tension, Greenspan recommends starting with some deep breaths. Sit comfortably without slouching so your ribcage can expand fully.

•   Shoulders carry a lot of stress, so try this one if yours are ridin' high: pinch or press the fingers into the center of the muscle that sits on top of your shoulders and rub using comfortable pressure to relieve muscle tension and headaches. This can be performed with both shoulders simultaneously or one at a time. You can use same side or opposite hand/shoulder, whichever works for you. Note that this pressure point should not be used by those who are pregnant as it can induce labor.

•   A great general pain point can be found in the fleshy area between your thumb and index finger. Pinch the thicker muscular area behind the webbing. You can hold the pressure steady for a few seconds, use gentle circular motions or a pulsing pressure. It may be tender, so work within your level of comfort. This pressure point should also be avoided by pregnant women.

•   Relieve back pain and send a message of relaxation throughout the entire body with a spinal twist. Lie on your back and pull your knees into your chest. Slowly drop your knees to one side, keeping your shoulders flat on the floor. Look over the opposite shoulder to extend the twist if it is comfortable for you to do so. Hold this position for several slow, deep breaths, then switch sides.

•   To lower anxiety, limit media exposure, especially before bed. Take regular breaks from your phone and computer to alleviate neck tension.

•   A quick way to relieve stress and headaches is with a scalp massage. Be sure to move the skin and not just your hair.

•   Another simple technique to try is aromatherapy. Lavender, chamomile and ylang ylang are especially calming, but use any scent that appeals.

•   A warm epsom salt bath soothes away stress and works wonders on aching muscles.

•   Remember your kids need stress-relief too. Be generous with the hugs. Even a quick back scratch or foot-tickle can do the trick.

•   And don't forget one of the best stress-busters out there: exercise! Crank up your favorite tunes and invite the whole family to dance (and laugh) the stress away!
