"Olympus Mons" - Visionary Novel Shows the Importance of Finding Water on Mars

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - April 8, 2020 - PRLog -- Decades after a miracle enzyme enables the direct conversion of carbon dioxide to oxygen in mammals,  it provides a major aid in opening Mars's hostile environment to permanent human residence.

But the modest pioneer population of Mars cannot survive without water! After a "Marsquake" damages the volcanic aqueduct pipeline, a group of rebels defy authority to scale the six-kilometer-high escarpment surrounding the largest-known shield volcano in the Solar System, then climb farther up the lower slopes to locate and repair the gravity-fed source of water.

The alternative? Death by thirst.

William Walling has written eight speculative fiction (sci-fi) novels. His latest imagines Planet Mars seed-populated by convicted felons, academics, and a variety of several hundred carbon dioxide-breathing "Marsrats" dwelling in Burroughs Enclave, an enclosed, pressurized crater set in the immense shadow of the Olympus Mons volcano and its vast aqueduct system, the only source of water above the surface on frigid, arid Mars. This epic survival tale stretches the limits of human determination and endurance.

About the Author: William Walling is an aerospace engineer who spent decades designing mechanical systems hardware at Lockheed Missiles & Space Company and other government contractors, including two major Lockheed projects, one designing elements of the U.S. orbital surveillance program, and a second of five years assigned to the partially declassified, ultra-secret CIA codename Project Azorian, which salvaged a Soviet-era naval submarine from the deep Pacific abyssal plain north of Hawaii. Since retirement, Walling has exercised his writing avocation by self-publishing e-books, plus a work of historical fiction, "Arminius," which deals with an ancient Roman battle against an army of barbarian tribes in Germania Magnus, as well as a humorous satire of the aerospace industry, "It's Too Late to Leave Early."

"This stunning perspective of what life on Mars could entail will open eyes and release inhibitions of what could exist in the universe. The sky is the limit!" – Robert Fletcher, CEO, Strategic Book Publishing and Rights Agency
