QUARTO D'ALTINO, Italy - April 7, 2020 - PRLog -- Guido d'Arezzo is known as the father of modern musical notation. Born about 1,000 years ago, most probably in Tuscany, his musical innovations replaced the ancient form of writing music, which did not use exact notes to be sung or played. His music indicated pitch with absolute precision.

In writing about Guido, author Janet Sethre reveals her love for Italy and her fascination with Gregorian chant and Catholic traditions.

While still a boy, Guido entered the Benedictine monastery at Pomposa on the Adriatic coast. He developed a linear system of musical notation that came at a time of cultural crisis fundamental to the growth of Western music.

The book "Signs of Song: Guido d'Arezzo in the Spring of Western Music" envisions Guido's life at this important time in musical history, as well as his connection to plainchant, and his experiences in medieval monasticism.
