On March 16th, 2020, the American Dental Association issued a statement that read:
"The ADA is recommending that dentists nationwide postpone elective procedures in response to the spread of the coronavirus disease, COVID-19, across the country." It goes on to state, "Concentrating on emergency dental care will allow us to care for our emergency patients and alleviate the burden that dental emergencies would place on hospital emergency departments."
Since that statement, individual State Dental Associations and State Boards have followed the ADA's lead to offer additional regulations prohibiting treatments that are defined as "elective". These States also have put in place dates that range as far out as June 15th before dental practices can re-open for all care for their patients.
"The unintended consequence is that a lot of Dental Practices are just shutting down completely since they are not able to generate sustainable revenues from emergency dental procedures alone," says Michael Fleming, President and CEO at Innovate Dental Marketing. He goes on the state, "Now that Emergency Departments are overwhelmed with preparation and care surrounding the current COVID-19 Pandemic, the last thing that these ED's need are Dental Related Emergencies that could easily be handled at a local dental practice."
According to recent research obtained by Innovate Dental Marketing, there were approximately 3 Million Dental related Emergencies that wound up in Medical Emergency Departments across the United States in 2019.
"Based on this research, we are looking at an average of 250,000 dental related visits to Emergency Departments every single month across the United States," says Michael, "and this estimate is based on when all local dental practices were operating as normal!" He adds, "Now that Dental practices are closing across the country, this burden on our Emergency Departments can only grow larger, placing an extra strain on an already brittle and overwhelmed Hospital infrastructure."
