By: Concerned Citizen Together, we find ourselves in an extraordinary situation with COVID-19. In the past few weeks, things have moved very quickly, and this pandemic is affecting all of our communities, our families and our very way of life. Essential Employees, Temporary Employees or Contractors are facing COVID-19 directly from the front line and are patiently working while new guidelines are created. Some employees are looking at our current situation as "People Versus Profit" as they continue to work while confirmed positive results arise on a daily basis. Different businesses are requiring different safety measures, but most employees are not being tested for Coronavirus because of limited testing supplies and employees are facing hazardous situations such as being exposed to others in close proximity just to come to work. These employees are working because something about their duties makes their job essential and these employees should be compensated for the hazards of being more exposed to COVID-19. Essential Employees, Temporary Employees, and Contractors should be taken care of so that they can help protect the public. A number of companies have already begun offering employees increased pay. Retailers Costco and Target, for example, have said they will pay employees an extra $2 per hour until April 5 and May 2, respectively. Walmart will give $300 bonuses to full-time workers and $150 to part-time employees. Some form of extra compensation should be given to employees for performing the duties that require them to ignore the social distancing that is being suggested and for working through discomfort with protective devices that don't eliminate the danger or without protective devices at all. Temporary Employees and Contractors are employed by 3rd parties in attempts to become employees at the companies that they work at and should immediately be hired by employers for employment opportunities that they seek since the extra compensation probably would not apply to them. Essential Employees are people and should be treated as such, employers need to show morality by showing the people that work for them that a "People Versus Profit" mentality does not exist in their company or in this country. Essential Employees, Temporary Employees, and Contractors (who are now new Employees) need to be immediately compensated by companies that are still open.
