Local Hastings-on-Hudson Trivia Develops Dedicated Local Following, Goes Online

HASTINGS ON HUDSON, N.Y. - March 25, 2020 - PRLog -- Local bartender James Dale, who runs music bingo at Doubleday's in Dobbs Ferry and whose family owns the familiar locksmith shop on Spring Street in Hastings-on-Hudson, is one-of-a-kind. Although you can't stump him with your request for a Tom Collins or Rob Roy, his service has always come with a shtick.

"I am stupid in a way. I have the same fear everyone does of speaking in front of crowds, but I can't seem to stay away from a crowd or a microphone," Dale says.

While sometimes that microphone is in front of his band, The Lords of Hawthorne, his reputation in Hastings has much more to do with his running act, mixed in with a little brain power.

"Everyone in Hastings just knows him as Captain Jim," says Hastings resident Caroline Romita, "the guy who fills Bread and Brine every Thursday night. I never miss it."

Dale's signature presence includes boat music (think Parrotheads and "If You Like Piña Coladas"), an encouragement to use the bar honed from his experience and surprisingly diverse, well-thought out trivia with rules, "where I actually score the quizzes to keep it consistent and fair."

"I want them all to come back," Dale says with conviction. "It is great that we have former Jeopardy contestants mixed with locals."

Dale researches his questions vociferously.

"I couldn't answer 90% of what I ask. I always start with 'this is not an intelligence test,' so that it is about the atmosphere and not about egos."

Local Jessica Woodhouse aptly said:

"I think that if you aren't having a good time, it is almost impossible to win. Relaxing, being around different people, even vibing to the Bee Gees, is all part of the experience and the gameplay."

Jim has decided to see what's next, with the hopes of working conferences, charity events and corporate team-building.

"It's gotten to the point where maybe I've realized I do this well and should be training a few more Captain Jims and dreaming big."
