UltraFlex applying carbide tipping to a mining tool using induction brazing

This induction brazing showcase application proved the energy-, time- and cost-efficiency of induction heating solutions for manufacturing.

RONKONKOMA, N.Y. - March 9, 2020 - PRLog -- UltraFlex Power Technologies - a leading manufacturer of induction heating solutions - recently published the results achieved with a carbide tipping induction heating application.

Industrial tools need ongoing maintenance and that can be costly. UltraFlex demonstrated how the mining industry can use induction heating solutions to increase the cost- and time-efficiency of tools maintenance.

In this showcase, a mining tool needed new carbide tips applied and induction brazing was used to accomplish the task. The brazing process required that the tool was first covered with BrazeTec Special h Paste. Brazing alloy BrazeTec 4900 BD 3×0.30 was afterwards applied onto the flux and the tips positioned on top of the alloy. Flux was further added in between the tips.

To melt the alloy and start the brazing process in a time- and energy-efficient manner, UltraFlex induction equipment from the UltraHeat M series had been used. UltraFlex UltraHeat M are 25-35 kW induction heating solutions using adaptive digital phase control and providing very efficient operation in a wide frequency range.

At power output of 35 kW and target temperature of 1652°F (900°C), it took only 8 minutes to heat the mining tool and accomplish the induction brazing process for the carbide tips. After the tool was left to cool, a strength and durability test was done for the joints produced, using a 10 kg hammer. The test passed successfully.

This induction brazing showcase application proved the energy-, time- and cost-efficiency of induction heating solutions for manufacturing. In addition, the heating process had been completely safe to the operator, and also safe for the environment, with no smoke, waste heat and noxious emissions.
