PHOENIX - March 2, 2020 - PRLog -- Dr. Lesley Williams-Blackwell authored a children's book that embraces the fact that kids come in all sizes, shapes and colors. Free To Be Me is ground breaking because it was written by a doctor, eating disorder specialist and mom who created it to help her own young daughter who was struggling with body image issues and low self esteem related to her size.

Body image concerns are being seen in younger as early as pre-school. Poor body image has been linked to depression, anxiety, low self-esteem and eating disorders and many more negative outcomes. Free To Be Me: self love for all sizes, targets elementary school aged children and features a young African-American girl who loves her body and overcomes being teased about her size.

African-American and Latina girls are not immune to body image and eating struggles. However, they are infrequently represented in the global conversations on these topics. Dr. Williams-Blackwell is hopeful that her book will spark dialogue across all communities about how our children are negatively impacted when they don't feel seen, heard or included. She seeks to change the narrative from waging a war on childhood obesity to inclusivity and how we can best support the mental and physical health of ALL children, regardless of their size, shape or color.
