In an environment of partisan news and foreign interference, we must become more aware of the manipulative forms of persuasion we face daily. We need to be critical about what we chose to think and believe.
We are surrounded by propaganda. Public relations campaigns, political messaging, and advertising are all forms of propaganda. Simply recognizing the extent to which we are exposed to manipulative and often deceptive forms of communication helps us to be more skeptical consumers of news, advertising and political messaging.
Propaganda is disseminated to both the Left and the Right. If we can become aware of how all of us are susceptible to propaganda and other manipulative and covert techniques, we may be able to see through the lies and distortions that divide us.
We often think of propaganda as coming from fringe groups, but propagandists include governments, political parties, politicians, religious institutions, political groups, corporations, partisan news, and the media.
We can protect ourselves by understanding the basics of propaganda.
