NEW! Handmade Bag Company Helps Lift Women Out of Poverty

ESSEX JUNCTION, Vt. - Feb. 20, 2020 - PRLog -- Bosisi Designs, LLC, designer of fashion-forward, trendsetting, sophisticated handbags handmade by disadvantaged women, announced today the launch of their first collection, which aims to empower and give underserved South African women an opportunity to work in order to lift themselves out of poverty.

"It is imperative that we find ways to empower women economically, financially, socially and otherwise. We are starting with one region at a time beginning with women in Diepsloot, South Africa and my hope is to improve one family's existence at a time - one bag at a time; to hire more and more underserved women in South Africa and maybe someday expand to other places where this kind of opportunity is needed," said Deana. "By offering an opportunity to work, women will be able to provide the basic necessities such as paying children's school fees, electricity, water, a safe home, and ultimately break the cycle of poverty. The more women we employ the more impactful we can be." She says that 'these unique bags represent a change from typical retail finds."

The collection includes five different bag designs and six bold color options for a total of 30 designs and color combinations including reusable Shopper totes, Everyday handbags, large Weekender overnight bags and Backpacks. Every bag incorporates typical South African fabric called 'Shweshwe' (pronounced shway-shway).

In addition to empowering women, Bosisi is also addressing the issue of single-use plastic waste by offering a reusable Shopper bag for groceries, etc. Plastic waste is a global issue that is harming fish and ocean wildlife, filling landfills and harming our climate.

Currently, Bosisi is selling in the United States via online sales channels including their website, Facebook and Instagram with four South African women sewing all bags. The seamstresses receive payment for producing the bags and a portion of net profits.

Deana Cheney started the groundwork that would become Bosisi Designs in February 2019 while living in Johannesburg, South Africa. As a "trailing spouse" Deana did not have a work permit and felt a bit lost, but found her purpose. She feels she can give back to the women who gave her so much during her time there.
