Alten Construction breaks ground on Belvedere-Tiburon Library expansion
By: Alten Construction Company
Alten Construction began the expansion project in November 2019 and is expected to complete the project in March 2021. Designed by EHDD Architecture and Brown Reynolds Watford Architects, Inc., the project will be completed in phases, allowing the library to remain open throughout most of the construction period.
The $12.6 million project includes an addition to the library as well as a remodel of the current building, a new parking lot and landscaping the adjacent Zelinsky Plaza and Park.
The single-story addition will add roughly 9,000 square feet to the existing 10,500-square-
"The many years of community input, planning and fundraising are truly paying off," said Deborah Mazzolini, director of the Belvedere-Tiburon Library. "This is a watershed moment in the evolution of the community's library. Congratulations to all involved for the support, dedication, confidence, expertise, time and hard work."
The new parking lot will be set back to protect the dedicated marshland behind the library, and the parking lot currently located between the library and Town Hall will be relocated to allow for expanded park use and open space, including a new scenic walking path along the marsh.
The expansion also features brand new outdoor community gathering spaces, including a Town Center Plaza, with outdoor seating overlooking Zelinsky Park, the Railroad Marsh and the Tiburon Ridge.
Located in Tiburon, the Belvedere-Tiburon Library is a shared service between Tiburon and neighboring Belvedere. The new space will be supported through a private, community-driven investment campaign by the Belvedere-Tiburon Library Foundation with more than 1,250 donors already supporting the expansion. A $600,000 contribution over the course of four years was also made to the library expansion project from the Tiburon Town Council.
