The Aruvikkara Dam is the best picnic spot in Kovalam. It is located right along the banks of the Karamana River and boating for a few hours on this splendid river will be a surreal experience. Seeing the fishes swim close to the surface of the water is a common sight here. Many of the locals believe these fishes to be sacred, and they always feed the fishes to get rid of any ailments. The Aruvikkara Dam is an ideal place for anyone who wishes to explore the beauty of the surrounding landscape via the joy of boating.
Vizhinjam is a scenic village in Kovalam. It houses plenty of fishing harbours, sunny beaches, fantastic ayurvedic resorts, and an ancient rock-cut cave temple. This is an all in one tourist location, where visitors can get to experience everything from history and culture to rejuvenating ayurvedic massages. Vizhinjam is a great place to visit with families since it offers a multitude of amazing activities and tours.
The Valiyathura Pier is a 214 m long jetty and it is located about 12 Km from Kovalam. The Pier offers enchanting views of the Arabian Sea and the coast. This is another great place to enjoy great sunset views without the usual bustle of tourist crowds. Get closer to nature by taking a quiet walk on the pier and listen to the roar of the rushing waves as they crash into the beach. Be sure to bring your camera long to capture the beauty of the beach and the setting sun.
The Halcyon Castle was once a palace built by Sri Rama Varma Valiya Koi Thampuran in 1932. It now functions as a 5-star hotel and it is popular among many tourists looking forward to spend their nights in an old palace. The Kovalam Art Gallery or the Sri Chitra Art Gallery, exhibits many stunning works of art and paintings. Wide ranges of works from different artists are displayed here.
