During her long career as a staff photographer for the Miami Herald and The Washington Post, she has documented an incredible amount of turmoil, upheaval and human suffering from Chechnya to Mosul to the earthquake in Haiti and the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina, all photographed with Guzy's unique passion and respect for all living things. According to her bio on the Pulitzer's website, Guzy "graduated in 1978 with an associate's degree in registered nursing… A change of heart led her to study photography at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, where she graduated in 1980 with an applied science associate's degree in photography. While at the Art Institute she interned the Miami Herald which hired her as a staff photographer upon her graduation. After eight years there during which she won the 1986 Pulitzer Prize for Spot News Photography (as one of a two-member team covering the Armero, Columbia mudslide), she moved to Washington, D.C. to become a staff reporter for The Washington Post." Carol Guzy will deliver the FOTOfusion Keynote lecture on Friday, February 14, at 1 pm. The lecture title is: Shooting with Passion: How Your Emotional Connection to a Story Makes for Great Reportage. She will share her images and the stories behind them from her decades-long career covering some of the worst natural and humanitarian disasters and brutal wars of our time. Guzy will explain how to show the effects of these crises through the eyes of those affected, how to connect with individuals in these situations, how to make emotionally impactful and iconic images with great humanity while preserving and honoring the dignity of her subjects.
