Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Dec. 23, 2019 - Marathon enthusiasts will find a great opportunity for a sea-level run in Puerto Vallarta next spring. On Sunday, April 26, 2020, the third edition of the Puerto Vallarta Marathon will be held. The event also includes a half-marathon and 5K (or 3.1-mile) race, so there are options for runners of all abilities.

The Puerto Vallarta Marathon confirms the region's reputation as a paradise for sports tourism. Runners who have participated in the event's two previous editions agree that the Puerto Vallarta Marathon route is spectacular. Running at sea level, flanked by palm trees and cooled by sea breezes, can be a very rewarding experience. An added benefit of running at sea level is often an improvement on personal times.

The 26.2-mile journey begins and ends at the modern facilities of the Puerto Mágico, a renovated space in the maritime terminal. The starting shot will be fired at 6:30 a.m. The official route takes runners from Puerto Mágico south to the Agustín Flores sports stadium, where they turn around and head back north along Francisco Medina Ascensio Boulevard to the Fluvial Vallarta residential quarter. After a circuit of that neighborhood, runners return to the boulevard, skirting the international airport and crossing the Ameca River to traverse Nuevo Vallarta to the El Tigre Golf Club de Golf, where they turn back to finish at Puerto Mágico. The half-marathon and 5K will be run on Francisco Medina Ascensio Boulevard in the hotel zone.

Runner participant kits include a commemorative shirt, finisher's medal, event bag, photo upon arrival and electronic timekeeping. The first three finishers will be rewarded for reaching the goal, regardless of age, in male and female categories. Prizes awarded will total more than 200,000 thousand Mexican pesos (over US$10,500). Age categories range from 18 years of age to "Veterans Plus," for those over 60. Entry fees start at 550 pesos (US$29).

Qualifying runners in April's Puerto Vallarta Marathon could be eligible to run the 2021 Boston Marathon.

Visitors who come to run will find that Puerto Vallarta is a world-class beach tourist destination, with multiple tourist services for all tastes and budgets. The port is recognized for its privileged location between the mountains and the bay and offers a wide variety of natural attractions.
