Meet Lowcountry Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine's Dr. James McCoy

Dr. McCoy joined Lowcountry Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine and helped grow the group into the largest orthopaedic practice in the region. As a sports medicine physician, he is dedicated to treating athletic injuries.

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. - Dec. 16, 2019 - PRLog -- Dr. James McCoy is more than just an orthopaedic surgeon to his patients. He follows them from injury to recovery and is invested in their health. "We are orthopaedic surgeons. Ten percent of the time we are surgeons and 90 percent of the time we are coaches. Our job is to guide patients through their injuries and recovery to get them back to work and play," states Dr. McCoy.

In 1978, Dr. McCoy joined Lowcountry Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine and helped grow the group into the largest, private, independent orthopaedic practice in the region. As a sports medicine physician, he is dedicated to treating athletic injuries of the musculoskeletal system. He specializes in both adult and pediatric arthroscopy, comprehensive joint surgery, as well as shoulder, elbow and knee injuries. Dr. McCoy treats patients of all ages, "Lately we have been seeing the 25-45 age range, weekend warriors that are not warming up and stretching."

Dr. McCoy not only takes care of athletes in the exam room, but can often be spotted on the sidelines of local football games as well. He is a member of the Wellness Committee at Ashley Ridge High School and Philip Simmons Elementary School. In addition, he is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Arthroscopy Association of North America, South Carolina Medical Association, and served as the past President of the South Carolina Orthopaedic Association and Dorchester County Medical Society.

As a sports medicine – trained surgeon, he has knowledge of targeted rehabilitation and muscle performance techniques to quickly return patients back to their daily lives. Dr. McCoy provided advice for those struggling with an injury, "Teenagers should bounce back in 4-5 days. The older more mature athletes, 2-3 weeks. If things have not improved, come see the pros."
