Robby Poblete Foundation and Vallejo Police to Hold Third Solano County Gun Buyback

By: Robby Poblete Foundation
VALLEJO, Calif. - Dec. 13, 2019 - PRLog -- The Robby Poblete Foundation and the Vallejo Police Department will be holding a Solano County Gun Buyback on Dec. 14 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at McCormack Hall at the Solano County Fairgrounds. This marks the third consecutive gun buyback event co-hosted by the foundation held in the county.

Materials from the decommissioned firearms from the buyback, as well as from weapons collected from law enforcement agencies from throughout Northern California, will be distributed to selected artists for the foundation's Art of Peace project to turn into art and placed in a local exhibit. The foundation's gun buyback and Art of Peace programs have been replicated in numerous cities and counties since the foundation launched in 2017. To date, the foundation has gotten nearly 1,000 unwanted firearms out of circulation, and has launched five Art of Peace projects in the Bay Area and Georgia. Its most recent Art of Peace exhibit was held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts using materials from the San Francisco gun buyback held in partnership with SF-based nonprofit, United Playaz. The exhibit attracted more than 500 visitors.

"It was important for me to hold our first gun buyback in Vallejo because this was where my son's life was taken, said Pati Navalta, founder and executive director of the nonprofit organization. "This was my way of taking a stand and saying that we all have a role to play and a responsibility to make our communities safer. One stolen gun from a home has the potential to be used in numerous crimes. That is what we are preventing with these buybacks."

The foundation's first gun buyback in 2017, held in partnership with the Eric Reyes Foundation and the Vallejo Police Department, yielded 180 weapons, and 115 firearms in 2018. Numerous assault weapons were surrendered both years.

"We are honored to partner with the Robby Poblete Foundation and the Solano County Fairgrounds for the third consecutive year for such a great event. We hope this event helps remove more unwanted weapons and firearms from within the community so they cannot create harm or heartache to anyone," said Sergeant Jeff Tai from the Vallejo Police Department.

Sponsors of the event include Congressman Mike Thompson (D-CA 5th District), and Solano County District 1 Supervisor and Chairwoman of the Board of Supervisors.

Gun owners are asked to store their unloaded firearms in their trunks before coming to the buyback. Up to $100 in gift cards will be given for each rifle and shotgun, and up to $200 in gift cards for each handgun and assault weapon, as classified by the State of California. Ammunition and other weapons, such as throwing stars, butterfly knives, switchblades, brass knuckles will be accepted; however no gift cards will be given for these items. Gift cards will be distributed while supplies last.
