National Friendly joins forces with The Bristol Hippodrome to combat loneliness
Loneliness brings its own problems too, such as increased vulnerability. Professor Keith Brown, who leads the Bournemouth University team, the National Centre for Post-Qualifying Social Work and Professional Practice, considers that loneliness is a major factor in influencing an individual's vulnerability.
But there are simple things that we can all do to help, as shown by The Bristol Hippodrome, which is pioneering new initiatives in this area. The theatre noticed that in the past six years, approximately 600 customers purchased a single senior rate ticket. As a result, The Bristol Hippodrome launched the Matinee Mingle which began in collaboration with LinkAge Network, a Bristol Charity which empowers older people to lead fulfilling and satisfying lives.
Jonathan Long, CEO at National Friendly explains, "We are delighted to be supporting The Matinee Mingle in association with The Bristol Hippodrome, LinkAge Network and Age UK to address loneliness in later life at a time where people may become more vulnerable. The Matinee Mingle encourages people aged 60 and above to get together and enjoy themselves and meet likeminded people.
The Matinee Mingle has proven to be an early hit with theatre goers, as recent feedback shows. Rhona Cockle, a recent convert comments, "The Matinee Mingle is such a nice way for people to gain confidence and meet friends in a world where being on your own can be quite daunting when you are older.".
The Matinee Mingle is free to attend and takes place an hour before selected mid-week matinee performances in The Bristol Hippodrome's Piano Bar.
