Local Baton Rouge Entrepreneur Sparks the Conversation About the Politics of Education

BATON ROUGE, La. - Dec. 2, 2019 - PRLog -- Entrepreneur Brad Gordon, launches The Renaissance, a new Baton Rouge non-profit that aims to give back to the local community in innovative ways, is leading the conversation about how politics factors into education with The Politics of Education, the Midnight Brunch ahead of the expected changes to come in East Baton Rouge Parish.

Following the recent incorporation of the City of St. George and in the midst of a search to find a replacement for the outgoing East Baton Rouge Parish Superintendent Warren Drake, The Renaissance President, Brad Gordon (a Baton Rouge native), thought it was the best time to address how education is impacted by politics and how in turn that impact affects educators and their mental wellness. With his idea in place, Gordon set out to bring together a panel of educators, city leaders, and professionals in the medical fields to discuss the pressures these changes may bring about.

Gordon also thought to put a twist on the event and conduct the panel in a non-traditional way. Looking at the citizens and communities who may be most touched by theses developments and combining his event promoter skills and knowledge of what his vast networks enjoy most, and decided to host the event in more of a night-life setting.

Panelists for the evening include mental health professional Avis Brown, physician Dr. Rani Whitfield, current Public Charter Educator & Public Gifted & Talented Theatre Evaluator April Skipper, and former educator Elle Williams. Assistant Professor of Southern University A&M College Department of Education Dr. Tonya Rose is the event co-host.

Recently released academic rankings grade EBR School system as a "C" district, while the state of Louisiana itself ranks 48 out of 50 in education and was declared the worst state for the third year in a row. Therefore citizens question how beneficial the new changes are though it has been stated that taxes will not increase for residents of either city, yet it is the taxes that fund the public school system and St. George's breakaway may decrease budgets.

The actionable item of this soiree is to get the community engaged and informed on the plight of EBR Schools post-St. George and to increase engagement from the community in reference to the superintendent search.
